An ECG roll (electrocardiogram or EKG paper roll) is a specialized thermal graph paper used in medical machines to print real-time electrical signals and heart rhythms (such as P waves, QRS complexes, and T waves) without requiring ink. A paper roll is a broad, general term for any continuous strip of paper wound around a core, used across many industries (such as thermal receipt rolls for point-of-sale machines, fax paper, or industrial rolls), which may or may not have medical calibration or thermal sensitivity. ECG Roll (Continuous Roll Format): - Design: A continuous strip of heat-sensitive thermal paper wound around a core, designed for continuous-feed or long-strip printing. Common Size: Available in various widths and lengths depending on the number of channels (e.g., 50mm, 60mm, 80mm for 3-channel machines, up to 210mm or wider for 12-channel machines; lengths typically range from 20m to 30m). Use Cases: Ideal for stress tests, long-term or extended monitoring, and routine clinical/emergency ECG printouts where uninterrupted tracking is required. Technology: Uses a thermal printhead inside the ECG machine that applies heat to turn the chemically coated surface dark without needing ink or ribbons. ECG Paper Sheet (Z-Fold or Individual Sheet Format):- Design: Flat, fan-folded (Z-fold) or individual cut sheets featuring pre-printed standardized millimeter-grid lines. Common Sizes: Tailored to fit standard diagnostic cart machines or modular multi-channel recorders that fold neatly into a tray. Use Cases: Commonly used in outpatient clinics, physician offices, diagnostic centers, and medical education/training because they stack flat for easy filing, chart review, and archiving. Grid Layout: Both rolls and sheets share the same diagnostic grid standard: - Horizontal Axis (Time): Each small square equals 0.04 seconds; each large 5x5 square equals 0.20 seconds. Vertical Axis (Voltage/Amplitude): Each small square equals 0.1 mV (or 1 mm); each large square equals 0.5 mV.
